The UK urges small businesses to pledge net-zero emissions by 2050 or sooner and how the government plan to help.
On the 28th of May 2021 Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted “Every step a small business takes on its journey to net-zero adds up, unleashing new opportunities. Today I met some brilliant small and micro businesses who are doing just that.” As he attended the Together for our Planet Business Climate Leaders campaign, alongside Business and Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng.
Every business in the UK regardless of its size is being urged to take practical steps, regardless of how small, to reduce their emissions, as we forge our way towards net-zero emissions by 2050. This campaign is being launched in the run up to the COP26 climate summit taking place in Glasgow in November.
The UK government has developed what they call ‘UK Business Climate Hub’ that will allow small businesses to access tools, resources and advice that will assist them in understanding their carbon emissions and develop strategies to reduce the carbon they are emitting. The hub will also provide ideas for steps that businesses can take, including installing energy saving light bulbs, switching to electric vehicles (EVs) and other cleaner forms of transport, exploring environmentally friendly packaging options or introducing cycle to work schemes for employees. Businesses that make a commitment to net-zero on the UK Business Climate Hub will be recognised by the UN Race to Zero campaign and will become ‘climate leaders.
