UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM

UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM

The University of Birmingham is ranked among the world’s top 100 institutions, its work brings people from across the world to Birmingham, including researchers and teachers and more than 6,500 international students from over 150 countries. The Birmingham Energy Institute (BEI) draws on the broad capabilities and expertise at the University of Birmingham and its strong relationship with collaborators from academia and industry, to produce studies and policy documents addressing the challenges facing today’s energy system.

The BEI is developing and applying the technological innovation, original thinking and new ways of working required to create sustainable energy solutions and support the regional, national and global transition to a Zero Carbon energy system.

As a research focussed institute, we are driving change in the way we deliver, consume and think about energy. Bringing together interdisciplinary research from across the University of Birmingham and working with government, industry and international partners our research is solving societal issues and addressing challenges relating to energy poverty, the circular economy, transport systems, cooling, hydrogen, energy storage and the decarbonisation of heat.

For the Repowering the Black Country project, researchers from the University of Birmingham will assess which local interventions would have most impact given national decarbonisation plans, and will establish how the Black Country can become an exemplar for industrial decarbonisation across the UK. Our work will look at energy demand from industry across the UK, including the end-use, fuels and associated carbon emissions. We are also assessing approaches to monitoring decarbonisation of industrial clusters, and how policy can incentivise the transition to net-zero.

Energy Systems and Innovation Reader

I am a Reader in Energy Systems and Innovation at the University of Birmingham, and lead the Resilient Cities theme of the university’s Institute for Global Innovation. My research focuses on policy and techno-economic analysis of energy systems, with particular emphasis on the integration of new technologies in the context of a wider socio-technical transition. After training as a physicist, I have spent much of my career in government, on the use of evidence in policy-making. I am now investigator on several major research projects, including PI of the £5m EPSRC-funded project, 'MANIFEST', co-I on the £8m EnergyREV consortium.

I am a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee for UKRI's Energy Programme, and was Specialist Advisor to the House of Commons Science and Technology Select Committee for the 2019 inquiry on Clean Growth Technologies.
For the Repowering the Black Country project, I am leading a team of researchers at the university, assessing energy use by industry across the UK, and approaches to monitoring carbon emissions from industry at a regional level.
I am also the Back Country Industrial Cluster academic lead for the £20m Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre (IDRIC). I am leading a project to assess systems, infrastructure and the technologies needed to provide Low Carbon fuels for industry, across the UK.
