FUTURE ENERGY SCENARIOS 2021: THE FOUR PATHS TO NET ZERO

FUTURE ENERGY SCENARIOS 2021: THE FOUR PATHS TO NET ZERO

Future Energy Scenarios (FES) represent a range of different, scientific based ways to decarbonise our energy system as the UK works towards net-zero by 2050. FES has an important role to play in stimulating debate and helping to shape the energy system of the future.

FES has released its new Scenario framework for 2021. In this report FES outlines four different pathways, each equally credible, for the future of energy between now and the target of 2050.

the four scenarios discussed are:

  • Steady progression: this is the slowest credible decarbonisation, with minimal behaviour change. Decarbonisation in power and transport but not heat.
  • Consumer transformation: electrify heating, customers are willing to change their behaviour, high energy efficiency, demand side flexibility.
  • System transformation: Hydrogen for heating, consumers less inclined to change behaviour, lower energy efficiency, supply side flexibility.
  • Leading the way: Fastest credible decarbonisation, significant lifestyle change, mixture of hydrogen and electrification for heating.

As companies begin to reopen at full capacity and the country recovers from COVID-19, we realise that changes need to be made, nation wide to reduce the countries carbon emissions. if we have learned nothing else let the last year have taught us that our opinions matter and our decisions can have an impact on global issues.

The report discusses the need for detailed policies and clear accountabilities, coupled with an immediate and sustained focus on delivery, to maintain the momentum provided by the Energy White Paper in achieving net-zero.
